Program Notes:

Mafic Sand is black sand created by the gradual erosion of volcanic rock, which you can see on beaches near the mouth of the Columbia River which helped to erode basalt and carry it from inland to the sea.  This is depicted in my piece Mafic Sand by large monolithic chords that are increasingly worn away, sometimes with air sounds and others with small melodic fragments that represent individual grains of sand. The piece is scored for for two piccolos, five flutes, two alto flutes, and two bass flutes.
